Ploce Gate

The Ploce Gate is the eastern side entrance gate to the old town Dubrovnik. This has the Romanesque infrastructure. The gate has an inner section, an outer section, and a stone bridge. It is marked with the beautifully made statue of the patron of Dubrovnik. The gate dates back to the end of the 14th century.

The Ploce Gate also is known as Gate of Ploce marks one of the three entrances to the old town Dubrovnik. It is present on the main street Stradun on the eastern side. There is a fountain called Onofrio’s fountain. The walled city of Dubrovnik is one of the most famous tourist’s attractions. Due to this, Ploce Gate sees tourists throughout the year. The main season is from March to November, which is comparatively busier than from December to February. This gate less crowded in comparison to the Pile gate, which makes it perfectly relaxed. Surrounding Ploce gate some eateries can be found. The UNESCO world heritage city of Dubrovnik also is a favorite location for filmmakers. This place has been captured in many movies, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi and HBO’s popular series Game of Thrones due to its rich historical architecture and appeal. There is an inner and outer section to the Ploce Gate. The inner section of the Ploce gate used to be called The Gate of Saint Luka previously. Doors of the inner section are quite small and made in Roman fashion. Saint Blaise’s head is carved on top of these. He was the famous patron of Dubrovnik. The outer section has the Revelin Fortress. There used to be a rivalry between Dubrovnik and its neighboring town on the Adriatic coast back in history, for they all competed in trade. These were Venice, Dubrovnik, Genoa, and Ancona. Due to this, the gates were kept closed for the town’s welfare. But nowadays, the gate is always open to inviting its countless visitors. Here along with the inner and outer section, the gate also has a stone bridge. Previously, it used to be a wooden bridge which was pulled up to prevent I wanted visitors from entering the Ploce Gate and the city. But later on, this was replaced by a beautiful stone bridge.
